Chapel by the Sea had its genesis through the work of the
Reverend George H. Wilbur,
a Sunday School Missionary who was sent to the community of Nelscott in 1935. In
1936,
the Oregon Council of Churches allocated the Nelscott field of work to the
Presbyterians
to develop. Willamette Presbytery appointed The Reverend Alfred M. Williams, who
was president of Albany College (now Lewis and Clark), along with Henry G.
Hanson
and George Wilbur, to assist the local people in organizing a church building
project
which began in 1936 on two lots donated by Charles P. Nelson. A congregation was
organized in January 1937 with 19 regular and 14 affiliate members as the North
Lincoln
Community Presbyterian Church of Nelscott.
In 1940, a dormitory was added to the rear of the church with the intended
purpose of
providing a pastoral residence and the upper dormitory would be used for youth
activities as well as conferences and retreats at the beach. The dormitory,
named
Williams Hall, had several remodelings and became a significant mission ministry
of the
church, used, among other things, as a meeting place for community groups, a
polling
place, and more recently as the North Lincoln County Food Pantry.
During the decade of the sixties presbytery purchased a tract of land for a
future
building site." This tract, on which our current building sits, houses our new
facility,
which was dedicated on January 5, 1992. Our current location enjoys better
visibility,
parking and access, and provides a lovely worshipful atmosphere, with a
sanctuary
which could seat up to 120.
In 2002, the congregation celebrated its 65th anniversary.
